1963 Boulder County Musical Memories

September 28, 2007

I was fortunate to spend a summer in and around Boulder during the
summer of 1963 marveling at all the music that was being created and
played in the area. So I was quite saddened to hear of the problems of
the Chings in presenting their house concerts. I had met the Chings at
some music conferences where many of the attendees would listen to a
selection of artists that we as presenters would be considering for
concerts. Greg and Deborah were very careful to explain that in doing a
house concert there were many elements one had to be aware of. Needless
to say they were very much related to the concerns that appear to be
brought up by some of the community   Bringing this kind of music to a
such a open and interested group of citizens seems to me to be one of
the most important ways to keep our own musical heritage alive and well.
In earlier years gatherings at your neighbors home was the only way our
music was kept alive. Noise, traffic in a city like Boulder seems to me
to be a bit of a stretch  Some of the younger artists that we have
presented have contacted me about their playing in Boulder via the
Chings and how great it was to meet such wonderful audiences . What else
can I say but I hope the greater Boulder community will not only support
this effort but also take part in a concert or two.

It's wonderful that  America can sing in a concert hall, at a festival,
in a church or in ones home. I wish that it was happening in every
village, town and city in America
